About Us

BESI-C brings together the creative, problem-solving spirit of both engineering and nursing, and represents a truly interdisciplinary research endeavor supported by a dedicated team of faculty, students and collaborators.

The BESI-C project combines John Lach's pioneering work in developing sensor platforms and data analytics to improve health outcomes, along with Virginia LeBaron's clinical and research experience as an oncology and palliative care nurse.

A diverse team of graduate and undergraduate nursing and engineering students helps support the day-to-day operations of BESI-C.

Project Management

Strategic project planning and management is supported by the University of Virginia Applied Research Institute.

BESI-C is currently supported by a 2-year grant from the American Cancer Society, Pilot and Exploratory Projects in Palliative Care, PEP-10-042-01-PCSM. BESI-C was previously supported by the University of Virginia Engineering in Medicine Seed Pilot Program.
